The St. Louis area has been growing and expanding even before the United States declared its independence. In 1764, the first St. Louis riverfront community was established and the first buildings were constructed.
As part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, St. Louis was officially acquired by the United States from France. During that same year, Lewis and Clark left for their expedition to the west, thus dubbing the area the "Gateway to the West."
Finally in 1822, St. Louis was incorporated as a city and expansion of the area began to accelerate.
