Green streets incorporate pedestrian and bike friendly elements, landscapes for visual enjoyment, air filtration and shade from street trees, as well as important stormwater treatment systems.  Along these “green” streets, storm water runoff will be directed into linear rain gardens that replace typical tree lawns. These landscapes will provide storage for low rainfall events as well as treatment for runoff and ground water recharge.

Regionally appropriate planting materials will be selected for location, climate and function to minimize strain on traditional storm water infrastructure as well as require less long-term maintenance. This green infrastructure along with the new GRG trails, improved and new sidewalks and new bike-lanes will support a reduction of automobile traffic and an increase of pedestrian and bike transportation. The added plant and tree cover in conjunction with reduced automobile use will contribute significantly to the reduction of CO2 emissions. The interconnectivity of the proposed green street system also will provide other immeasurable health benefit opportunities by supporting walking and biking communities which will contribute to healthier, happier individuals.
