During the 19th century, the St. Louis area experienced a boom in immigration. Due to social, political, and economic issues in their home regions, immigrant settlers began moving to St. Louis seeking new opportunities in this rapidly growing city.
Over a period of 20 years (1840-1860), the population grew by 800%. This period of immigration created a very diverse population of settlers and a hurried need toward public improvements to accommodate this growth.
