Original settlement of the area reflected the style of the French Commonfields. The term "commonfield" is used to describe the pattern of elongated agricultural fields that were separated by trails and paths. Located near the riverfront, these settlements were placed to take advantage of St. Louis' major attributes of soil and water.
The paths and trails were established around these commonfields eventually because the road pattern that was used in 19th century St. Louis. All of the emerging residences were constructed around these roads, many of which still exist today.
